« Personal Histories & Artistic Identity / Histoires personnelles & l’Identité artistique »

LARRY LIST, curator indépendant New Yorkais, “ live from New York “ !

Organisation et traduction : Deborah Bowman, Chargée d’enseignement et doctorante à l’Université Bordeaux Montaigne

The question “How do artists find ideas?” could be reframed as “What is the relation between personal history and artistic identity?” Larry List explores these questions in an innovative communication that shatters the commercial “master narratives” of galleries and museums. Drawing on his experience as an independent curator / writer / researcher in New York City, List supports his hypothesis with little-known stories from artists’ lives.

Like Vasari, he reveals the backstage of the lives of artists such as Damien Hirst, John Cage, Takako Saïto, Barbara Kruger, and Kathy Grove. He also has pertinent advice for student and emerging artists seeking a personal path.

Larry List has worked as a studio artist, model-builder, researcher, writer, curator, and master-planner of exhibition spaces around the world. He has a BFA from the Tyler School of Art, and an MA and MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Researching and replicating lost art works for museums led to curating exhibitions for the Noguchi Museum, The Menil Collection, the Rekjavik Art Museum, and the DOX Contemporary Art Center in Prague, among others.

Among his curatorial projects are Found Language (early art in all media made from appropriated texts); Digital Domains (early digital works); Skin Trade (skin as material or metaphor); Cage & Kaino ( electronic, performance, musical and art works by John Cage and Glenn Kaino); and The Imagery of Chess Revisited (a reconstruction of an influential lost exhibition about chess and Surrealism).

He has contributed writings for exhibitions at the Tate Modern, the Andy Warhol Museum, and here in Bordeaux, for the Takako Saïto exhibition at the capcMusée.

Currently, Larry List is writing a book on the transition of 20th c. print processes into 21st c. digital media, and the introduction to a catalogue on the work of Sherrie Levine.
